You only need 3 ingredients to make these healthy homemade cat treats. And you might already have them all in your pantry!
- Salmon: Use canned salmon for this recipe, or another canned fish.
- Egg: Beat the yolk and whites together before combining with the flour.
- Flour: I recommend using whole wheat flour for these nutritious cat treats.

Any canned, oily fish will work in this recipe, and your kitty will thank you for being so creative. Try tuna, mackerel, or even canned shrimp! You can also substitute canned chicken.
If you want the goldfish shaped cutter I used, Here’s my affiliate link to get one. If you prefer, use any cookie cutter that is about 3/4-inch.
Add up to 1/3 cup of water to the dough if it’s too dry. If it’s too wet or sticky, add in a small amount of flour until you get the right consistency. It should be tacky but not sticky.
They should be slightly brown and crunchy on the outside.
How to Store Homemade Cat Treats
Let the treats cool completely before storing. Scoop them into an airtight container, like a mason jar, or resealable bags. Store them at room temperature or in the pantry, for up to 2 weeks.
They’ll be ready to hand out to your furry friend any time they need a treat. And these are healthy enough for them to eat (many) every day, so you can feel good about spoiling them!

Ingredients
- 10 ounces canned salmon undrained
- 1 egg beaten
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Pulse 10 ounces of undrained, canned salmon in a food processor to chop as finely as possible.10 ounces canned salmon
- In a stand mixer, combine salmon, 1 egg (beaten), and 2 cups whole wheat flour until dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add up to 1/3 cup water. If it's is too wet or sticky, add a bit more flour. The dough should be tacky but not sticky.1 egg, 2 cups whole wheat flour
- Roll dough on a floured surface until about 1/4-inch thick. Use a 3/4-inch cookie cutter in the shape of your choice to create your treats.
- Place treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 350° for about 20 minutes. When they’re slightly browned and crunchy, they’re done.
- Allow to cool before serving.
- Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

Does it matter if the salmon has the bone in since it is processed in the food processor?
Could you use canned tuna instead of salmon?
also wondering if you can use tuna instead of salmon? I made some with salmon, but my cats arent crazy about salmon but they love tuna. I would love to see if they like these better with tuna.
How big was the cutter you used? I have some small fondant cutters that I think would work.

Ok, so my family is gluten free, meaning we only have rice flour around here. Do you think this recipe will work with rice flour? Should I ask the vet first if our cat can eat rice? His pet food is salmon and rice so I think it should work fine but what are your thoughts?
Vets often recommend rice for dogs with tummy problems so rice is a good bland food source for animals.
I have to totally disagree with the sucess of this recipe. I also saw it in my Family Circle magazine, and decided to give it a whirl with all 4 of my cats. Well, they sure hung around the kitchen when I opened that can of salmon…but that’s where the interest ended. I even added catnip to my treats, and once they were cooked, not a single cat had any interest in these teats.
On the positive side, I enjoyed them; basically this recipe produces gourmet salmon-flavored oyster crackers. And the recipe is also way off on the quantity…my batch made almost 4 times what the recipe said it woud.
My cats did not like them either, but the dogs went bonkers for them. My Scottish terrier mix is very picky and he loved em. Love your recipes even if the cats didn’t. ????
