What’s in these 3-Ingredient Cat Treats?
You only need 3 ingredients to make these healthy homemade cat treats. And you might already have them all in your pantry!
- Salmon: Use canned salmon for this recipe, or another canned fish.
- Egg: Beat the yolk and whites together before combining with the flour.
- Flour: I recommend using whole wheat flour for these nutritious cat treats.
I love that these are real food ingredients, so I know my cat, Dill, is getting the best of the best!
It was such an honor to have this cat treats recipe printed in the August 2015 edition of Family Circle Magazine.

Any canned, oily fish will work in this recipe, and your kitty will thank you for being so creative. Try tuna, mackerel, or even canned shrimp! You can also substitute canned chicken.
If you want the goldfish shaped cutter I used, Here’s my affiliate link to get one. If you prefer, use any cookie cutter that is about 3/4-inch.
Add up to 1/3 cup of water to the dough if it’s too dry. If it’s too wet or sticky, add in a small amount of flour until you get the right consistency. It should be tacky but not sticky.
They should be slightly brown and crunchy on the outside.
How to Store Homemade Cat Treats
Let the treats cool completely before storing. Scoop them into an airtight container, like a mason jar, or resealable bags. Store them at room temperature or in the pantry, for up to 2 weeks.
They’ll be ready to hand out to your furry friend any time they need a treat. And these are healthy enough for them to eat (many) every day, so you can feel good about spoiling them!

Just made these this morning , full of hope our two cats would love them. Took one sniff and walked off…maybe it’s a Burmese thing.
OH NO!!!! That’s such a bummer!
Do you remove the bones from the salmon, or just puree them in with the meat?
I always buy filets without bones. You would def want to remove bones first. Thanks for asking!
These sound delicious and I was thinking of making them for both my cat and dog clients. Some are grain free though and I was wondering if you knew the substitution ratio if using coconut flour instead
Someone said flour is not good for cats. Is that true? Thank you.
Are these treats supposed to turn out hard like regular cat treats? Or a little bit squishy like bread?
The bad news is that Tervis won’t eat them. This is bad because Tervis eats anything. Out of the four cats I thought at least Terv would take a bite, alas, not even a swat. He was like “ are you serious with this fugazi ? “. Sorry folks, don’t waste your time..
Darn, I’m sorry Tervis didn’t like them! Our cat loves them but I know every cat is different, just like people. Hope you have a great week regardless.
Is it okay to use regular flour. I forgot to get whole wheat but have white flour in the house.
It should be fine. Whole wheat can be easier for *some* cats to digest but for most cats its totally fine :)
Is it ok to use regular white flour? I heard oat flour but cannot find it and I have no wheat at this time.
Hi Becky! Thank you for this recipe, I am looking forward to making it today. I am concerned about using the salmon undrained. I think the salt content in the Brand I PURCHased Is way too high to INClude in the treats. i will drain, rinse and add spring water and a bit of olive oil Possibly as a replacement for the Canning liquid. I’ll let you know how my girls like these!
I LOVE this idea. That is so smart. Please let me know how it goes and I’ll likely update the recipe to reflect that. Such a great idea and much better for our furry friends! I appreciate you letting me know <3
Hi Becky, and THANKS! The treats Have been unanimously approved. Substituting the water worked very well, I did not try adding any oil, but that might merit some experimentation. Also, I wanted to make the treats much smaller for training so I Baked the dough in a big sheet until it was handleable and then cut a grid of tiny squares. The squares could be re baked for crunchy mini treats. I just about got mugged by my cats when i was Putting the finished treats in a jar. These are SO much better than commercial treats! I will make these again!
HA! I’m so happy to hear this! “mugged” by my cats LOL!
Storage question: stored in AN airtight container at room temperature or refrigerated? Thanks!
You can store at room temp. Hope your cat enjoys!! <3
