You only need 3 ingredients to make these healthy homemade cat treats. And you might already have them all in your pantry!
- Salmon: Use canned salmon for this recipe, or another canned fish.
- Egg: Beat the yolk and whites together before combining with the flour.
- Flour: I recommend using whole wheat flour for these nutritious cat treats.

Any canned, oily fish will work in this recipe, and your kitty will thank you for being so creative. Try tuna, mackerel, or even canned shrimp! You can also substitute canned chicken.
If you want the goldfish shaped cutter I used, Here’s my affiliate link to get one. If you prefer, use any cookie cutter that is about 3/4-inch.
Add up to 1/3 cup of water to the dough if it’s too dry. If it’s too wet or sticky, add in a small amount of flour until you get the right consistency. It should be tacky but not sticky.
They should be slightly brown and crunchy on the outside.
How to Store Homemade Cat Treats
Let the treats cool completely before storing. Scoop them into an airtight container, like a mason jar, or resealable bags. Store them at room temperature or in the pantry, for up to 2 weeks.
They’ll be ready to hand out to your furry friend any time they need a treat. And these are healthy enough for them to eat (many) every day, so you can feel good about spoiling them!

Ingredients
- 10 ounces canned salmon undrained
- 1 egg beaten
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Pulse 10 ounces of undrained, canned salmon in a food processor to chop as finely as possible.10 ounces canned salmon
- In a stand mixer, combine salmon, 1 egg (beaten), and 2 cups whole wheat flour until dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add up to 1/3 cup water. If it's is too wet or sticky, add a bit more flour. The dough should be tacky but not sticky.1 egg, 2 cups whole wheat flour
- Roll dough on a floured surface until about 1/4-inch thick. Use a 3/4-inch cookie cutter in the shape of your choice to create your treats.
- Place treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 350° for about 20 minutes. When they’re slightly browned and crunchy, they’re done.
- Allow to cool before serving.
- Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

Thank you so much for this great treat idea. I took your original recipe and modified a bit. I used 2 eggs instead of 1. I minced the salmon with the fork, because I do not have a food processor, And I only used less than a quarter cup of organic fine cornmeal. It turns out a bit running but after cooking at 375F, on convection oven, they are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They are so delicious that I have been making double batches because I eat them to. Lol
Our little 7 months young, Bella and all the community cats love them as well. Eggs are great for Kitties. Makes their fur shinier and is good for their eyes and general health. I know some people saying flour is not good for cats, So I use corn meal, which is one of the top ingredients in pretty much all dry cat food out there! But like some of you have switched to pea flour, great idea, you can still use this awesome recipe and make it your own version.
will dogs eat these? i can’t seem to find a dog recipe without peanut butter and pumpkins.
I haven’t tried it with my dog yet, but it will depend on how picky your dog is!

Does the baking process smell bad? I wanted to make these with tuna but don’t wanna make the whole house stinky.
It doesn’t smell like chocolate chip cookies, but it isn’t too bad!
It’s extremely strong, even after I made them my house still smelled like fish after 2 hours

I don’t think your little one will enjoy the taste enough to eat it all! Definitely meant to taste good for just cats!
I like the idea but 2 things to think about. I would use pea flour instead of wheat. The idea of using canned salmon or other fish for cats is really not a good idea. Scraps that would otherwise be tossed out fine but salmon are already overfished and the idea of catching wild salmon to feed cats is a shortsighted one. I fish myself so I already pressure cook carcasses after making fish stock out of them. I then mash them up bones and all and run them through the Vitamix. I mix a bit in with their kibble and they love it. Find a fishermen and ask them for the carcasses they most likely are tossing in the trash

Oh no! Some cats can be pretty tough food critics. I would add a small portion of whatever food/flavor they tend to love and see if that helps?
