What’s in these 3-Ingredient Cat Treats?
You only need 3 ingredients to make these healthy homemade cat treats. And you might already have them all in your pantry!
- Salmon: Use canned salmon for this recipe, or another canned fish.
- Egg: Beat the yolk and whites together before combining with the flour.
- Flour: I recommend using whole wheat flour for these nutritious cat treats.
I love that these are real food ingredients, so I know my cat, Dill, is getting the best of the best!
It was such an honor to have this cat treats recipe printed in the August 2015 edition of Family Circle Magazine.

Any canned, oily fish will work in this recipe, and your kitty will thank you for being so creative. Try tuna, mackerel, or even canned shrimp! You can also substitute canned chicken.
If you want the goldfish shaped cutter I used, Here’s my affiliate link to get one. If you prefer, use any cookie cutter that is about 3/4-inch.
Add up to 1/3 cup of water to the dough if it’s too dry. If it’s too wet or sticky, add in a small amount of flour until you get the right consistency. It should be tacky but not sticky.
They should be slightly brown and crunchy on the outside.
How to Store Homemade Cat Treats
Let the treats cool completely before storing. Scoop them into an airtight container, like a mason jar, or resealable bags. Store them at room temperature or in the pantry, for up to 2 weeks.
They’ll be ready to hand out to your furry friend any time they need a treat. And these are healthy enough for them to eat (many) every day, so you can feel good about spoiling them!

Can we use canned sardines? And are you kin to John Wesley as me? Thx!!
I have an 18 year old cat who really does not like fish. Would it be possible to make this with chicken or turkey? I would also like to make cat safe gravy for her.
You can give it a shot!
I forgot to add, I baked these at 325°F and took them out before crispy. Leaves them a bit chewy, cuz who doesn’t prefer chewy cookies over crunchy?
I love both!
did your cats eatthem?
Well, my cat loves this recipe. I had my doubts cuz I’ve never done homemade treats before but if I had kids I’d bake cookies, so why not? It really needs a stand mixer and not a handheld mixer as the dough gets thick. I have the idea that this recipe can be a great way to administer medecine of any kind, carefully dosed and hand mixed into treats.
Definitely modify to your liking!
Are you kin to John Wesley, a bit personal, I know, but I am…
Cats would not eat them
I am sorry to hear! Cats can be picky!
Yeah made my cats very very sick
I have read post and I am going to still give them a try but seeing the post of making them sick, I may us less amount of salmon oil maybe half and half? Our cats are not use to salmon or the oil, so knowing this Im crossing my fingers they enjoy the treats. I also will be making chewy/softer along with the crunchy oone cat is Class A picky and one that trys to eat anything. thanks for sharing
canned fish is extremely high in salt is it not?
Definitely modify to your liking!

I used cooked fish, i even added some freshly grated coconut and a tiny spoon of the grass my cats love to nibble at. I used 1 egg for 1 cup wheat though. It came out well. Thank u!
