I love that this baked mozzarella sticks recipe is an easy and relatively healthy way for kids and adults to get their cheese fix. Wrapped in ham and baked into an eggroll is an amazing way to eat melty cheese. We are big fans of these cheese sticks!

I can’t get these to brown up. The egg roll still looks raw and I have cooked them a lot longer than the directions say.
You can try broiling them for a couple of minutes!
I loved using the egg roll wrappers as they weren’t doughy and tough. We weren’t thrilled with the garlic salt as we thought it was too salty and next time, we would rather just use melted butter with some Italian seasoning.

I have a question….do you have to use cheese-string? Can I use mozzarella (from a block of cheese) and cut it into long rectangles shaped like cheese string? My son won’t eat cheese-string as he is environmentally conscious and feels there is too much packaging. Thanks

Do string cheese and whole/real mozzarella melt the same then?
They melt pretty similarly!

They are definitely very different in taste and texture, but you can try to use tortillas instead if you’d like!
Sandra, please – did you try it with a tortilla? I’m concerned about the melting through/not browning mentioned, but really want to use this as an easy/accessible/filling food for the kiddos and me on those tough days! No air fryer here. Would maybe just rolling them around a dry skillet do the trick? And sorry – lastly, I’ve never worked with egg roll wrappers but love how this sounds so much yummier. Are the wraps freezable (just in pack as is) and is there a certain type, please?

Jess, you can freeze egg roll wrappers in an airtight container or Ziplock bag for up to 6 months. Let them thaw overnight in the refrigerator before separating.
We’re sure these would be delicious with breaded mozzarella sticks, but the cheese would not be as melty as if it weren’t breaded.
We do think you can make these with tortillas successfully, but you may need to brown them in a pan afterward to get them extra crisp!
