My favorite way to start any morning is with a steamy cup of Bulletproof Coffee. Bulletproof Coffee (or Butter Coffee) is a rich, creamy coffee drink filled with healthy fats. This pick-me-up is made with coffee, grass-fed butter, and MCT oil. “Bullet Coffee” has many added health benefits that I just don’t get from regular black coffee. When I need a little extra fuel in my day, you will catch me whipping up a batch.

What’s in this Bulletproof Coffee Recipe?
Bulletproof Coffee is a science-based approach to nutrition and wellness that is tried, tested, and proven to make life more awesome. It’s important to use the right ingredients, and there are lots of variations and add-ins I’ve come to love. A base recipe for Bulletproof Coffee includes:
- Coffee: I love that Bulletproof coffee beans are clean, toxin-tested, and ethically sourced. The whole beans and grounds produce some of the tastiest coffee I’ve ever had.
- Ghee: While you can use regular butter, ghee makes this recipe lactose-free! I love to find a ghee that is grass-fed and chock full of butyrate, Omega-3s, vitamin A, and CLA. Plus, ghee makes this the creamiest latte you’ve ever had. Trust me!
- MCT Oil: MCT Oil is sourced from coconuts and contains two of the most ketogenic MCTs in coconut oil: C8 and C10. MCT’s are saturated fatty acids that are easier to digest than other types of fat, so they’re great for digestion. Generally, the MCT oil in bulletproof coffee will help you feel full and satisfied, will give you more energy, and will give you a clear, focused mind.
I’ve heard that healthy fats from butter and MCT oil help to stop food cravings that often happen when drinking coffee. Win win!

Optional Ingredients and Add Ins
In my recipe, I chose to include pink salt and ground cinnamon. These ingredients are totally optional, but they do have some great health benefits!
- Pink Himalayan Sea Salt contains over 84 minerals and trace elements. It helps me stay hydrated and healthy throughout the day. Plus, it enhances the flavors of this coffee even more!
- Ground Cinnamon is loaded with antioxidants that protect the body from oxidative damage. It’s also anti-inflammatory and has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease. It can also help reduce blood sugar levels and keep them more stable throughout the day, which can help curb cravings. Adding just a little bit to my coffee not only gives me all of these benefits, but it also tastes delicious!
Serving Suggestions
I love this keto coffee with protein powder or Collagen Peptides stirred in, stevia or agave nectar for a bit of sweetness, or unsweetened cocoa powder for a touch of chocolatey flavor.
5-Star Review
“I made exactly per the recipe except I used coconut oil instead of MCT oil because I don’t have any. Plus I used freshly made homemade butter! It’s delicious!!!” – Lilly
“I love ghee coffee as one of the best morning beverages. It gives me energy, stamina, and health benefits like constipation cure, immunity boost, etc.” – Lucia Smith
MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides or medium-chain fatty acids. This type of fat is most often derived from coconut oil or palm oil. MCT oil is colorless, odorless, and stays liquid at room temperature, which makes it perfect for blending into drinks, smoothies, and other recipes. It’s great for added energy and a sharper brain! It also suppresses hunger, provides quick/clean energy, supports immune health, and can help you lose unwanted fat.
Pink Himalayan sea salt contains over 84 minerals and trace elements, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper, and iron, so it’s more than just a flavoring for meals and recipes. I love the little zip (plus all the minerals!) it adds to this recipe, but it’s totally optional.
Those following a ketogenic diet focus on high-fat, low-carb. So keto coffee generally refers to any coffee recipe that contains healthy fats and no sugars. Drinking black coffee is fine on this diet, but adding healthy fats, as in this bulletproof coffee recipe, makes it a better option than regular coffee.
Coffee with butter might sound strange at first, but it’s not as crazy as it sounds! Adding a pat of butter to your coffee can add a good dose of healthy fat to your diet first thing in the mornings, especially if you usually drink coffee on an empty stomach. This helps give you energy so that you don’t end up with a caffeine crash. Butter also makes your coffee super creamy, like the best latte.
If you’re doing a traditional fast, where you’re abstaining from all food and drink, then yes, bulletproof coffee will break your fast. However, if you’re focusing on staying in ketosis, then bulletproof coffee won’t interfere with that.
I love ghee coffee as one of the best morning beverages. It gives me energy, stamina, and health benefits like constipation cure, immunity boost, etc. Ghee coffee is approved in keto diet planning. I love keto ghee coffee to start my morning chores.

Why does this coffee look light – as if cream were used? Made it exactly & it is much darker
Some added for taste!
Morning Corbin. I just made my first cup and after stirring it up with a spoon it was black but after mixing it with a hand Braun it was creamy brown. Go figure.
Butter is made from cream.
If i wanted to boil the coffee in a pot.how much water do i put? I dont have any coffee maker to brew my coffee
12 ounces!
I’m allergic to dairy. Can I use vegan plant based butter?
You can sure try!
Made my first bullet coffee today, was really surprised at how it tasted, it was frothy and delicious I added organ clean protein for a little creamer instead of stevia.
Thanks for sharing your success with us, Shirley!
For those of you who wonder why the color change, the immersion blender acts as an industrial butter churn. I really appreciate your endeavor to post on things such as bulletproof coffee. Many of us who are trying to jump in to a healthier lifestyle, heal our “inner doctor” so to speak.. it really helps with visuals, video’s and why we use certain ingredients. I DEFinately need to find my happy combinations. My nutrition/acupuncturist suggested grass-fed butter over MCT (too potent) and Ghee tastes gross. I added a chocolate protein shake powder (1/4 the recommended dose), and it tastes like a mocha :)

Can I make this with just butter and coffee and maple syrup? I know it won’t have the benefit of the MCT but would it still turn out?
You can give it a shot!
if you put maple syrup, or agave, or many other sweeteners that are not keto appropriate then you will not experience the effects of this coffee in the same way. you’re body will spike insulin and move away from burning fat for energy. totally defeats the purpose.
So delicious!

This recipe is great. I just have a question, is super hot coffee safe to put in the blender? I guess it probably is if not glass. I havent tried blending yet because I was nervous the glass would crack
I am no scientist but it doesn’t need to be super hot to go into the blender!
Can use “Butter Powder”, grass fed & organic from Amazon. Great flavor and easy to mix.
